Originally introduced to the National Archives of the Netherlands in the 1970s, the all-aluminum drawer system has continued to be the standard for inert storage in museums and archives. Since then, the system has been refined and expanded to satisfy a greater range of conservation storage needs.
Unlike wooden chests or steel flat files, Arkive units are fabricated from recycle-grade aluminum and offer a lighter and more rigid drawer - a key value to conservators and collections management staff. The lighter weight construction also reduces floor loading for historic buildings. With complete control of the design and manufacturing process - whatever the ask, Arkive can answer.
A key benefit to the Arkive drawer cabinet is the flexible sizing. The width and depth are adaptable to adequately store contents, or make best use of floor space. A selection of standard cabinet heights, and the abilty to stack cabinets, provide the modularity to efficiently use vertical space.
CABINET HEIGHTS
Cabinets can be fitted with glass viewing tops, Abloy locking systems, and leveling or caster bases.
The standard range of drawer heights accomodate storage of single prints up to 3D objects. All drawer fronts feature a full-width handle with an integral label holder. Precision drawer gaps and dust-exclusion brushes provide superior protection for contents.
DRAWER HEIGHTS
Design your cabinet with different drawer heights to store your entire collection effieciently.
From standard aluminum sheet or composite panel to mesh screen, the selection of drawer base materials address conservation requirements across a range of objects and processes. Optional acrylic drawer tops are ideal for open-access display.

DRAWER REMOVAL
Drawers can be secured in the cabinet, or easily and safely removable with innovative detent-style indicators.
The standard Arkive finish is a matte silver anodized aluminum. From powder coat finishes to custom millwork, we can work with you to fulfill any special aesthetic goals.
Drawers can include custom foam inlays with laser-cut cavities to secure and protect artifacts. We can work with provided dimensions or coordinate a comprehensive object scan.
Features of Arkive are also present in our conservation drying racks. The polyester mesh drawer bases remove any chance of leaving a pattern when drying maps, prints, or drawings. Available as standard on high quality casters, or with levelling feet.
